The culture that has produced this spectacular set of dwellings, many with their respective names like Square Tower House, Cliff Palace, Casa de los Balcones, etc, is the Anasazi culture expanded in other archaeological sites located near Four Corners Bureau green.

Belonged to the Anasazi culture of the desert, that today there are still many questions on this subject, but we know that 2000 years ago the first inhabitants of this region and worked basketwork also practiced nomadic, living in holes dug, covered with logs and mud. As we were leaving the nomadic and sedentary habit acquired, these caves were improved and the walls were transformed into walls adjacent to other holes, thus beginning to form villages, usually located in the plateaus and in the caves of slopes.

In the twelfth century, they began making their stone houses of several storeys, and evolved up to a great perfection. With many buildings have an underground religious significance, known as "kivas," and this is a period of Mesa Verde.

Then at the end of the twelfth century, the Anasazi abandoned the building and choose to live in caves in the rocky walls, known as "Cliff dwellings".
